Submissions

September 3rd, 2018

Toasted Cake is closed to submissions.
Next submissions window will probably be August 2019. Check back in May or so for updates.

All stories submitted in August 2018 should have received a hold or rejection notice. Please query immediately if you did not hear anything. If you have a story in the hold pile, you can expect to hear back with a final answer by the end of September.

Thank you all so much!!!

What to Submit:
> Toasted Cake is a flash fiction podcast. At this time, please only send stories between 650-1200 words. (Sweet spot is 700-1000.)

> A few descriptors I like are weird, quirky, twisted, funny, fun, literary, puzzling, bizarre, tongue-twistable, singable, patter-friendly, elocutionary, experimental, witty, and wistful.

> I mostly run reprints. Original stories fine too (given that I like rather odd things, and sometimes these are hard to place, feel free to try me.) You may send stories that have been previously podcast if it has been at least 2 years since they aired. Please let me know all publication details.

> I am incredibly interested in stories told from all the myriad diverse perspectives of our world. Please send them to me.

How to Submit:
> Send your submissions to [Sorry! Closed at this time.]
> Subject line should be "Toasted Cake Submission: [Your Story]"
> You may send up to three flash during the submission period (all in one email is fine), as text in the email or as attachments.
> Please include the word count.
> Please include a short bio that could be run with your story.

Slushpile Details:
> During the month-long reading period, I read submissions once or twice a week. At that time you will hear "Not for me" or "Hold". I go through the hold pile after the month-long window is closed. You will hear on any held submissions by the end of the second month.

> Please query immediately at the end of the 1st month if you heard nothing at all, or at the end of the 2nd month if you heard nothing from a hold. (And I DO respond to everything, so if your email is not reaching me, you can always @me on twitter at @tinaconnolly.)

Payment:
> I am paying $15, generally via paypal.
> I buy non-exclusive audio rights.

Etc:
First: Read more about Toasted Cake, or see the list of stories run so far.

Second: Why are you no longer paying in drinks? Answer: Because that was super fun, but an accounting nightmare.

Third: I will again be buying enough stories to run for the whole school year. Then take a couple months off in summer to swim and teach and read more stories for next year!

Fourth: Because of the Patreon, Toasted Cake is now able to increase the word count to 1200, and the pay rate to $15. Thank you so much to all of you who have supported the podcast! <3 The donations go to support payment to the authors, hosting costs, and to your friendly host with her glamorous narration booth quilt fort. There will be extras available to patrons AND followers (you can follow for free!), so check it out!

What to Submit:
> Toasted Cake is a flash fiction podcast. At this time, please only send stories between 650-1000 words.

You will hear on any held submissions by the end of the second month (though usually much sooner). Please query immediately at the end of the 1st month if you heard nothing at all, or at the end of the 2nd month if you heard nothing from a hold.

> I am paying $10, generally via paypal.

Etc:
First: Read more about Toasted Cake, or see the list of stories run so far.

Second: The reason for the 1000 cap this time around is that I'm increasing pay rates to $10, and that way everyone gets at least 1c/word. Yes, I would like to raise this in the future.

Third: Why are you no longer paying in drinks? Answer: Because that was super fun, but an accounting nightmare.

Fourth: I plan to buy enough stories to run for the whole school year. Then take the summer off. We will see how this goes.

Fifth: For those of you who have asked about donating, I have set up a patreon at www.patreon.com/tinaconnolly. This will help fund the increased pay rate, and potentially fund further increases in both pay and word count. There will be a small number of extras available through the patreon; hop on over and check them out!

Sept Subs Done

Hey all! All September subs are complete and done, except for one person who's been notified. If you have not heard from me, please query immediately (and um, I'll answer you when I get back from World Fantasy! :)

BTW, if you didn't know, there is a Toasted Cake group on facebook. I post the weekly eps and occasional updates, and you can comment on any ep at any time there.

Oh hey, while I'm here - I'm not sure if I'll have connection in Toronto - if I don't, Monday's ep will go up a little late. See you then!
Thanks for all your submissions, everyone! I have responded to all subs, with yay, nay, or hold pile, so if you haven't heard from me please query immediately. (I did find 2 subs in my spam folder.)

I will be going through the hold pile over the next couple weeks (but do bear with me, as I've got a lot of travel this month.) ALSO, I have to figure out if there is a TC2013, and if so, what. Big decisions ahead....
Breaking News! Toasted Cake WINS the Parsec for Best New Podcaster!

I am so thrilled - thanks to all of you for listening, and for your feedback and support. Toasted Cake was also a finalist for Best SF Magazine - big congrats to Drabblecast for winning that one, and to all the other nominees in both of these categories. So many thanks also to the judges, admin, and everyone involved with the Parsec awards!

I sent excerpts from 4 episodes, btw - they had to be from the first four months of the year, and I chose Caroline M. Yoachim's Pageant Girls, Cat Rambo's The Coffeemaker's Passion, Helena Bell's Please Return My Son Who is in Your Custody, and Steven R. Stewart's Mark and Shelly's

The other news is that Toasted Cake is open for submissions for the month of September. Please, send in your odd little flash stories. I need ten more to round out the year.

PS: Several of you have asked if there will be a Toasted Cake 2013.  My best guess currently is that there will be something, but it will be different.  Stay tuned....
Toasted Cake will be open to submissions for the month of April.

What to Submit:
> Toasted Cake is a flash fiction podcast. I tend to like stories between 700-1200 words. I occasionally run a few "Giant" stories (1200-2000), but I am pretty selective on these. If you're sending 300-400 word stories, let me know if I can run two for the price of one.

> A few descriptors I like are weird, quirky, dark, twisted, funny, literary, puzzling, bizarre, tongue-twistable, singable, patter-friendly, elocutionary, witty, and wistful.

> Reprints/repods totally fine; just let me know the details. Original stories fine too (given that I like rather odd things, and sometimes these are hard to place, feel free to try me.)

How to Submit:
> Send your submissions to tinaconnolly. I am on gmail.
> Subject line should be "Toasted Cake Submission: [Your Story]"
> You may send up to three flash, preferably as links or text within the email.
> Please include the word count.
> Please include a short bio that could be run with your story.

Details:
> I will probably wait and read all the slush at once at the end of April. But you might hear yes or no sooner than that.
> I am paying $5. Toasted Cake's methods of payment so far have included:
* a $5 bill in an envelope with a thank-you note written on an old holiday card;
* donation back to the cause;
* deferred payment of one drink, payable by me in person at a convention;
* cold heartless futuristic transfer via paypal.

You may choose any option you prefer.
Want to subscribe to Toasted Cake via iTunes or anything else? Yay, now you can! Just go here to the Feedburner page and clicky-click on the links. As well, per the iTunes folks, Toasted Cake should be findable in the iTunes store within the next couple days.

Want to know who's coming up at Toasted Cake in the future? Next week is Jason Heller, author of Taft 2012. Down the road we have some awesome stories in the lineup, including ones from Cat Rambo, Jessica Reisman, Rachel Swirsky, and a NEW story from the magnificent CSE Cooney.

Want to submit a flash story? I'm planning to do a submissions window (as soon as things calm down around here.) I'm currently thinking April. So check back for details!
